Tips and Tricks for Creating the Perfect Closet

I can not function without being organized! I believe it makes life much easier. When it comes to my shoes and clothes, to keep from over-shopping and being overwhelmed, I have to have an organized closet. I pride myself on creating and maintaining a functional system to keeping my closet clean and organized. Here are some tips and tricks to help clear up the clutter in your closet.

1. Take inventory of what you have
We typically only wear 30% of our wardrobe. One of the main reasons is because we do not know what we really have. Shopping should be a fun experience, but also a smart one. We often times buy items that we don't really need and/or believe that buying more clothes creates more options. One of the ways to combat that myth, is taking frequent inventory of what you need and purging what you don't need. My rule of thumb is, if I can't make at least two outfits with an item or if I haven't worn it in over a year, it has to go. Also, if I cannot fit the item it definitely has to go. Believing that we will "eventually" get into a shirt or a pair of pants is psychological torture! Our body weight fluctuates regularly, however if you are holding on to pieces that are extremely too small/big, that is a constant way to remind yourself you're not where you want to be. Which in turn can give you a negative perception of your body (more on that in a later post), which ultimately does more damage than good.

2. Hang with orderly purpose
Once you see what clothes you actually have it's time to hang with a purpose. It's best to start out with seasonal pieces. If you're lucky to have more than one closet or have enough room in your closet to separate your clothes, it's best to separate them by dusk seasons (fall/winter, spring/summer, and all year). Keep things simple, all shirts together, pants together, sweaters, blazers, etc.

If you're slightly anal like myself, I factor in color as well.

3. Consider your space
Use your space wisely. If you have space for shoes and accessories, be creative. For example, one of the ways I store my hats is by using a thumb tack. A typical thumb tack is the best way to hang your hats on the wall of your closet, ultimately optimizing on the space in your closet.

4. Plan your outfits
Create outfits ahead of time. Every week I plan out my looks for each day, which is something I extremely enjoy. It allows me to be very creative in selecting my looks, helps me to keep inventory of what it is I actually have, and saves me a lot of time in the morning when getting ready. I sometimes spend hours styling outfits, taking pictures of them and using them for future reference. Mainly when I have those moments of having nothing to wear, I refer back to my pre-created looks. For some, doing this is a pain however, I believe it's so worth it.  Starting out, I suggest taking time to at least plan your look a day in advance.
