1. Know When to Shop:
One of the unfortunate realities when it comes to shopping in stores is that they do not carry many larger sizes. In fact, the number decreases drastically the larger the size. For example, manufacturers will ship a store, let's say 100 size 2's for a particular item like a dress, while only shopping 40 size 16's. That is why it's very important to know what day and time to shop. Working in retail for a period of time I learned that the best day to shop is Wednesday afternoons. Reason being is most stores receive their restocking shipments Wednesday mornings. Hence the reason why by the weekend there are few to no items left to choose from.
2. Embrace the Tall Section:
Many retailers are now embracing the idea of adding more choices for tall women (usually ranging from 5'7 to 5'11). Which means, longer hemlines, longer inseams, and more fabric. However, if you're someone like me who may need a little more help, online shopping is your friend. You can find an even wider selection range through online shopping. Some of my favorites are:
Asos.com
Alloy.com
LongTallSally.com
These sites carry a myriad of options for the tall girls. Jeans with up to a 39" inseam.
3. Find what flatters your frame :
Figuring out styles that flatter your frame can be difficult however once it's done stick to it. This is only happens through trial and error. For example, I tend to stay away from tops that do not cover my crotch area because of my abnormally long legs. Wearing tops that cover at least the top hip area, balances out the leg line. Making you look more propositioned. Another example of this is finding peices that elongate the frame. Such as pointed toe shoes. Whether a pump or a flat a pointed toe shoe tricks the eye into believing that the leg line is longer than it appears, which ultimately makes you look slimmer.
4. The "Waters" are your friend:
I can not begin to tell you how frustrating it is to find the perfect pair of pants/jeans. If I want pants that are long enough I usually can only buy them online. However, I've learned to embrace the "high water" trend. As long as the length of the pant stops at least at the top of the ankle, you can create a chic look. Keep in mind proportions. This usually only works best with skinny jeans. Anything voluminous should be couple with something more slimming.
5. Never take nothing as is:
I'm a huge fan of altering my clothes or getting them altered. Sewing on extra buttons, letting out hems, bringing in a waist, whatever it takes to create the perfect look. You'd be surprised how much a tailor can change any item. It is best to consult with a tailor and discuss different options as it relates to creating more options from your looks. Never accept a garment as is, envision what you want and recreate it with what you have.
I hope these simple tips and tricks help you find the perfect style for your talk frame!
